چکیده

Basalts from the East Pacific Rise (EPR), Siqueiros transform zone and Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) area have been analyzed for platinum-group elements (PGE) a wide range of incompatible elements. The low PGE content most primitive mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) suggests that they leave mantle sulfide-saturated but become sulfide under-saturated, as consequence decompression, during their ascent to MOR magma chamber. Because pressure drop is small, ascending enters chamber slightly under-saturated requires only small amount fractional crystallization return it sulfide-saturation. Sulfide-saturation marked by Pd melt falling over an order magnitude at ca. 9.5 wt.% MgO. However, once has sulfide-saturated, shows no evidence further decline in with decreasing MgO system evolves. This must result regular replenishment underlying axial fresh batches magma. Magmatic filtering of mantle compositions at mid-ocean-ridge volcanoes

Earth’s dominant form of magmatism occurs at mid-ocean ridges (MORs), producing the igneous crust for two-thirds of the planet’s surface and conveying significant heat and material fluxes from the mantle to the world’s oceans. Mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) magmas form from upwelling compositionally heterogeneous mantle1 by aggregation of near-fractional melts beneath spreading centres2. Multipl...

Ridge migration, asthenospheric flow and the origin of magmatic segmentation in the global mid-ocean ridge system

[1] Global observations of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) bathymetry demonstrate an asymmetry in axial depth across ridge offsets that is correlated with the direction of ridge migration. Motivated by these observations, we have developed two-dimensional numerical models of asthenospheric flow and melting beneath a migrating MOR. The modification of the flow pattern produced by ridge migration leads to ...

A hydrous melting and fractionation model for mid-ocean ridge basalts: Application to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores

[1] The major element, trace element, and isotopic composition of mid-ocean ridge basalt glasses affected by the Azores hotspot are strongly correlated with H2O content of the glass. Distinguishing the relative importance of source chemistry and potential temperature in ridge-hotspot interaction therefore requires a comprehensive model that accounts for the effect of H2O in the source on meltin...
